Tuesday's 15-game MLB slate contains only evening games, beginning at 7:05 PM Eastern time. Three Diamondbacks make it into this edition of value plays, but there are plenty of other dangerous teams and individuals in action. Read on to find out who they are and what separates them from the pack.
PITCHER
Aaron Nola, PHI vs. LAD ($45): Nola has posted 12 quality starts in his past 16 outings, accruing a 3.03 ERA, 2.96 FIP and 120:29 K:BB over 104 innings in that stretch. That extended history of success puts Nola in position to do well against a Dodgers team that has scuffled of late with losses in 18 of its past 23 games. Most pitchers with his combination of strikeout ability and ERA are priced much higher, so $45 is reasonably cheap for the electric 24-year-old.
Zack Godley, ARI at SD ($48): Godley benefits from a tremendous combination of matchup and momentum here. His three September starts have produced a 1.29 ERA and 23:6 K:BB over 21 innings, putting him in tremendous position to find success against a pitiful Padres lineup. San Diego ranks dead last with 3.77 runs per game and strikes out the fourth-most at 9.26 whiffs per contest.
CATCHER
Chris Iannetta, ARI at SD ($15): Iannetta has pummeled left-handed pitching this year with a .402 wOBA in 84 plate appearances. The right-handed hitting catcher is cheaper than most of his teammates despite batting second in the order and producing a pair of three-hit performances in the past four games. Padres southpaw Travis Wood is unlikely to stunt Iannetta's momentum considering he's allowed a .392 wOBA to right-handed hitters.
FIRST BASE
Paul Goldschmidt, ARI at SD ($24): Goldschmidt's not as affordable as Iannetta, but that's not surprising considering the first baseman is the likely frontrunner for NL MVP at this point. His .406 wOBA against lefties suggests this matchup against Wood will provide an excellent opportunity for Goldschmidt to bolster his case for the award. Goldschmidt's success isn't a product of playing his home games at the hitter-friendly Chase Field, as his .409 road wOBA against lefties is actually better than his .404 home mark.
SECOND BASE
Dee Gordon, MIA vs. NYM ($18): Gordon's ability at the plate and trademark speed should both come into play here. Mets righty Seth Lugo has a tidy 2.84 ERA at Citi Field, but he's been terrible on the road with a 6.59 ERA in 54.2 innings. New York as a team also struggles with holding runners on, as Mets opponents have the seventh-most stolen bases per game with 0.62.
THIRD BASE
Ryon Healy, OAK at DET ($17): Tigers lefty Chad Bell has been terrible since moving from a bullpen role into the rotation, with 13 earned runs allowed over 12 innings in three starts. Healy's .374 wOBA against southpaws suggests he has the skills to add to Bell's woes, and batting in the heart of Oakland's order should allow Healy to maximize his damage at the plate.
SHORTSTOP
Didi Gregorius, NYY vs. MIN ($15): The left-handed swinging Gregorius has found success against righties, managing a .366 wOBA while mashing 21 of 24 home runs and 22 of 26 doubles in that split. Yankee Stadium's 10th-ranked 1.05 park factor should help fuel another strong Gregorius performance against Minnesota's Jose Berrios. Berrios has posted an unimpressive 5.14 road ERA and admitted to suffering from late-season fatigue after tying a season-worst with four walks over 5.2 innings in his last start.
OUTFIELD
Nelson Cruz, SEA vs. TEX ($19): Cruz has owned Texas starter Martin Perez with a lifetime .368/.500/.895 line and three home runs in 19 at-bats. That success is representative of the veteran slugger's overall proficiency against left-handed pitching, as his .345 wOBA in that split this year should be viewed as an outlier after he finished no lower than .416 in any of the previous three seasons. Expect Cruz to close that gap here, especially since his home wOBA against lefties has been potent as usual at .393.
Byron Buxton, MIN at NYY ($21): Buxton has dominated left-handed pitching, and this Yankee Stadium matchup with CC Sabathia should be no exception. The 2012 second overall pick has overcome a slow start to raise his season wOBA against lefties to .366. He's been terrific against everyone lately with a .339/.382/.623 line since July 4.
Jesse Winker, CIN vs. STL ($11): Winker has been tremendous against right-handed pitching with a .411 wOBA in 92 plate appearances. St. Louis righty Jack Flaherty comes into this game with a 6.08 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in three starts, so he's worse than the majority of pitchers to face the affordable outfielder from that side. At just $11, Cincinnati's leadoff man is an obvious choice here.
