To return in April
WelterweightOther
February 24, 2021
Northcutt will take on Shinya Aoki in a 170-pound matchup under the banner of ONE FC on April 28, Ariel Helwani of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Northcutt will have been on the sidelines for nearly two years by the time he enters the ring for this matchup, as his ONE debut against Cosmo Alexandre resulted in multiple fractures in his skull. The promotion certainly hasn't given the now-24-year-old any matchmaking breaks since signing Northcutt back in 2019, as ONE will now hand him a 37-year-old veteran of nearly 60 professional fights. Aoki owns a win over former UFC champion Eddie Alvarez back in 2008 and has also shared the cage with former UFC fighters such as Gilbert Melendez and Ben Askren. While Northcutt has youth and overall athleticism on his side, this won't be a walk in the park. It's also worth noting that 29 of Aoki's 46 pro victories have been earned by submission, while both of Northcutt's UFC losses were via submission as well.

Still can't spar in full

May 21, 2020
Northcutt has yet to be cleared for full-contact sparring a year after undergoing facial reconstruction surgery, Farah Hannoun of MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Northcutt was brutally KO'd in his ONE Championship debut against Cosmo Alexandre and required surgery almost immediately to repair as many as eight separate fractures in his face and skull. It appears he's still in recovery mode and has yet to receive full-contact clearance from a physician -- a step that would be the first in getting back to professional fighting. ONE remains on hold due to the global pandemic, but Northcutt remains optimistic about continuing his fighting career. He was always considered a phenom in his UFC days, and remains just 24 years old.
On the recovery path

Northcutt has yet to receive medical clearance to resume training but is optimistic for a 2020 return, Stephen Foote of the South China Morning Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Northcutt suffered a brutal knockout in his One Championship debut fight at the hands of a dangerous opponent in Cosmo Alexandre, and he later admitted a bit of confusion with the weight class system there, which is aimed at getting fighters to compete closer to their natural weight. Northcutt moved up to welterweight for his debut fight against Alexandre after spending much of his UFC tenure at lightweight, though he know intends to move back down to featherweight once he's ready to return (note: the featherweight limit is similar to the UFC's lightweight limit under the ONE FC rules). It's been over seven months since the knockout that ultimately required surgery to repair a fractured skull, and the first step to getting back will be getting clearance to train.
Breaks face in KO loss
WelterweightOther
May 22, 2019
Following his loss to Cosmo Alexandre via KO (punch) under the banner of ONE FC last Friday, Northcutt revealed via his personal Instagram account that he underwent surgery to repair eight fractures in his skull.
ANALYSIS
Northcutt left the UFC on a three-fight winning streak, most recently knocking out Zak Ottow in the second round last July. The 23-year-old was a prized signing of the overseas-based ONE FC, which recently expanded their TV deal with US broadcasters. Northcutt's signing follows in the footsteps of other former UFC fighters Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez, but like Alvarez, Northcutt's debut did not work out as planned. This speaks volumes to the caliber of competition that ONE has to offer. As for Northcutt, he's going to require a significant amount of time on the shelf before returning to sparring and/or sanctioned competition.
Leaves UFC

November 27, 2018
Northcutt is no longer affiliated with the UFC after his contract expired, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Northcutt had been with the UFC since Oct. 2015. The welterweight owns a 6-2 record with the promotion and an 11-2 overall record as a professional. He had won his last three UFC fights, the most recent of which was a second-round knockout of Zak Ottow at UFC Fight Night 133 in July.
Earns first welterweight win Saturday over Zak Ottow
WelterweightOther
July 14, 2018
Northcutt defeated Zak Ottow via TKO (punches) at 3:13 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Boise, Idaho.
ANALYSIS
Considering the adversity he faced early in the bout, this may have been the most impressive performance of Sage's young UFC career. Northcutt somehow survived a vicious right hand from Ottow in Round 1 and then used his world-class conditioning to turn the tables on his opponent in Round 2. Sage is still making his fair share of mistakes at age 22, but it's clear the full-time move to Team Alpha Male has helped him and he still has one of the highest ceilings in the entire division. This is the type of win that can give Northcutt plenty of confidence moving forward.
