Weekly Rankings: Week 2 Rankings

Weekly Rankings: Week 2 Rankings

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Week 2 Rankings

Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: three points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards.

A few notes about the rankings:

- The first edition of the Value Meter will appear on the site every Tuesday afternoon.

- These are my rankings. They don't necessarily correspond with the RotoWire cheatsheet, or our projections for the season. I use both as a rough guide for groupings, but then I factor in my own opinions into the mix as well. Please don't ask me to justify my ranking vis-a-vis the cheatsheet. This should also be a second opinion from the Lineup Chooser. Again, my rankings are exactly that - my rankings. They will diverge from other such ranking devices on the site.

- Early in the season, the rankings are more likely to reflect my opinion on their overall value, rather than how the matchup affects them. Things change quickly in the NFL, so trying to use the schedule as a heavy weighting factor now seems perilous.

- UPDATES: I will do two updates in addition to trying reply to your comments. That said it's on you to stay abreast of breaking news on the site, especially over the weekend. We cover a lot, so if you don't want

* = check status (not necessarily injury status)

Quarterback

1. Philip Rivers SD vs. JAC
Note: If Kyle Orton can go off against this bunch ...
2. Peyton Manning IND vs. NYG
3. Drew Brees NO at SF
4. Aaron Rodgers GB vs. BUF
5. Tom Brady NE at NYJ
Note: Had two miserable games against the Jets last year.
6. Tony Romo DAL vs. CHI
7. Brett Favre MIN vs. MIA
8. *Michael Vick PHI at DET
Note: Kevin Kolb won't practice until Friday. Kolb did not pass his first concussion test on Monday.
Update: Vick officially named the starter after Kolb failed a second concussion test on Wednesday.
9. Joe Flacco BAL at CIN
10. Matt Schaub HOU at WAS
11. Eli Manning NYG at IND
12. Carson Palmer CIN vs. BAL
Note: Most of his production came late last week, and he threw a soul-crushing pick-six in the first half that essentially put the game out of reach. However, the hurry-up offense in that second worked and the Bengals now have the personnel to pull it off.
13. Kyle Orton DEN vs. SEA
14. Matt Ryan ATL vs. AZ
15. Jay Cutler CHI at DAL
16. David Garrard JAC at SD
Update: (Back) Added to the injury report, listed as probable.
17. *Donovan McNabb WAS vs. HOU
Note: The ankle still isn't 100 percent, and he doesn't have much to work with in his receiving corps.
Practiced on Wednesday despite dealing with a sore ankle still. Officially listed as questionable.
18. Matt Cassel KC at CLE
Note: I have to say, I wasn't watching the same game Trent Dilfer was watching last night, given the praise heaped upon Cassel.
19. Chad Henne MIA at MIN
20. Matt Hasselbeck SEA at DEN
Note: Had a decent fantasy day thanks to the defense delivering good field position, but the Seahawks didn't move the ball all that well.
21. Vince Young TEN vs. PIT
22. (prev. 30.) *Shaun Hill DET vs. PHI
Note: Matthew Stafford is out with a sprained AC Joint in his shoulder. Getting a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews this week.
23. (prev. 31.) *Matt Moore CAR vs. TB
Update: It now appears that Moore (concussion) will be able to start rather than Jimmy Clausen. As bad as Moore played last week, this is still good news, especially for Steve Smith.
24. Alex Smith SF vs. NO
Note: Abysmal all game against the Seahawks. Some of the blame goes to Michael Crabtree and the offensive line, but the buck stops here.
25. Derek Anderson AZ at ATL
26. Mark Sanchez NYJ vs. NE
Note: Lead the Jets to just five first downs all night against the Ravens.
27. Jason Campbell OAK vs. STL

29. Sam Bradford STL at OAK
Note: Asked to throw the ball 55 times in his NFL debut.
30. *Dennis Dixon PIT at TEN
Note: Named the starter again for Week 2. Though he didn't throw any touchdown passes, he had a 9.1 YPA in the first game.
Update: Some added job security because Byron Leftwich was released for this week, and will be re-signed next week.
31. (prev. 27.) *Seneca Wallace CLE vs. KC
Note: Jake Delhomme undergoing an MRI on his right ankle.
Update: Sat out practice both Wednesday and Thursday. Delhomme officially ruled out, Wallace will start.

Note: Same old, same old.

Running Back

7. Arian Foster HOU at WAS
8. Rashard Mendenhall PIT at TEN
9. Ryan Mathews SD vs. JAC
10. *Steven Jackson STL at OAK
Note: Inflamed right knee, scheduled for an MRI. Too bad, too, as the matchup is superb.
Update: Full practice on Thursday.
11. Frank Gore SF vs. NO
Note: Gore's two biggest games in the past have come against Seattle. His lack of running room in Week 1 is a disturbing sign.
