The deal with Cyprien is simple: he does nothing but pile up tackles and get hurt. It turned out to be the latter this season, as Cyprien tore an ACL within the first week of training camp. The Titans signed Kenny Vaccaro as a potential replacement, but Kendrick Lewis should get the first crack at the starting job.
Cyprien isn't much of a cover safety and is unlikely to give you much as far as coverage stats go, but he's a uniquely reliable source of tackles. Despite missing four games in the span, Cyprien has exceeded 100 tackles in each of his four NFL seasons. He signed with Tennessee this offseason after previously starting in Jacksonville, but the change of scenery shouldn't alter his statistical output a great deal. Cyprien's production wasn't just a result of Jacksonville's defense spending so much time on the field -- he only needed 982 snaps to total 114 tackles in 2014.
The Jaguars added Tashaun Gipson to the secondary this offseason, and it's Cyprien who the move may ultimately benefit most. Gipson, a true single-high coverage safety, will enable Cyprien to spend most of his time in the box, where he's most comfortable, essentially functioning as a hybrid linebacker/safety. As a result, Cyprien's interception total is unlikely to climb, but he should remain one of the league's better tackling safeties.
After logging triple-digit tackles in each of his first two seasons, Cyprien is a darkhorse candidate to finish 2015 as the top defensive back IDP. He was limited to 15 games each season, too, giving him room for growth with better health. Don't expect an impact in the playmaking categories, though. He has one sack and one interception in two years, and both came in 2013.
Cyprien unsurprisingly struggled a bit early in his first year out of Florida International, but the 33rd overall pick from the 2013 draft showed improvement as the year went on, ensuring his place in a full-time role for Jacksonville for at least another season. He showed major IDP upside as a rookie, finishing with 103 tackles (86 solo), one sack and one interception in 15 games, hitting double-digit tackles three times. The Jaguars are weak at linebacker aside from Paul Posluszny, so there's a chance Cyprien will be Jacksonville's second-leading tackler this year. High tackle totals are nothing new to Cyprien – he actually led Florida International in tackles during the 2010 and 2012 seasons – so he should once again be among the league's best triple-digit tackle threats at defensive back in 2014. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Jacksonville will likely struggle on offense, resulting in plenty of three-and-outs and turnovers.
The 33rd overall pick from the 2013 draft, Cyprien is expected to play the Kam Chancellor enforcer role for Jacksonville as new head coach Gus Bradley attempts to replicate the defense he built in Seattle. While Chancellor is a linebacker-safety hybrid, Cyprien is better rounded as a player with both free- and strong-safety skills, meaning he should be more active in coverage than Chancellor. None of that is meant to downplay Cyprien's contributions as a tackler, though, because he posted 365 tackles in 50 career college games.
