The Broncos officially placed Crick (back) on injured reserve Friday, Andrew Mason of the Broncos' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Crick has dealt with a back injury since mid-August, the team remained optimistic he would be ready for the start of the season. He was unable to go Week 1, and it now appears the injury was more serious than originally thought. The 28-year-old is expected to undergo surgery to repair the issue. Adam Gotsis will now step up at defensive end with Crick out, while the team picked up Ahtyba Rubin to help provide depth.

As the Broncos searched for a veteran presence to replace the departed Malik Jackson on the defensive line last year, Crick, who played under much of the Broncos' then-coaching staff in Houston, was a logical choice. He responded with a respectable three sacks on the season, but did little to make anyone forget about Jackson's disruptive play. Entering 2017, Crick might be feeling the squeeze from Denver's influx of talent along the line, with both his starting job opposite Derek Wolfe and roster spot up for grabs. The Broncos have spent their second-round pick both in 2016 and 2017 on interior players to slot opposite Wolfe. Adam Gotsis, the team's 2016 selection, figures to be Crick's primary competition on early downs. Gotsis was a stout run-stuffer at Georgia Tech and was not at full strength his rookie season while on the mend from a torn ACL. DeMarcus Walker, the team's 2017 pick, is likely to start his career as a pass-rush specialist. The Broncos also added Zach Kerr, who can rotate in all along the line, in free agency and re-signed Billy Winn, a reserve on last year's team. With the Broncos likely to carry just seven defensive linemen, it is possible that Crick and Winn will be competing for one roster spot. Crick should be the favorite in that competition, but he will likely be returning to a reduced role in 2017.
Crick will be counted on to participate in the committee that will be used to replace inside rusher Malik Jackson. Listed as a backup to starters Derek Wolfe and Vance Walker, Crick has experience with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and defensive line coach Bill Kollar from their time in Houston. He recorded 104 tackles, 5.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries over the last two seasons.
Crick, a fourth-round selection in the 2012 draft, emerged as a starting defensive end for Houston in 2014. He was mostly on the field for running situations, but contributed 3.5 sacks and we anticipate a larger role for him in 2015. With J.J. Watt and Vince Wilfork occupying attention on the front line, Crick might be in line for increased sack totals.
Crick has made the transition from college inside lineman to professional defensive end. And now he'll compete for the starting end position opposite J.J. Watt, though we anticipate changing personnel and schemes. That means Crick may not play every down if he wins the job, unless he forces his way into the team's plans as a three-down player.
Crick appeared in 15 games and played 20 percent of Houston's total defensive snaps. A fourth-round pick in 2012 out of Nebraska, Crick received a lesson in push-rushing, playing behind J.J. Watt and Antonio Smith. He's worked this offseason on developing pass-rushing moves that work for him. He'll fill a similar role in 2013.
The Texans are looking for Crick to play inside at tackle, though he has experience all over the defensive line.
