Jones is coming off a campaign lost to injury and also faces a four-game suspension to open the regular season. However, he may not have been ready for the start of the season anyway, so the suspension may serve as a blessing in disguise and bolster Jones' season-long outlook in the event that the punishment allowed for a full recovery. When eligible, Jones will strengthen a thin defensive line on a defense that allowed the 25th-most yards rushing in 2015.
Jones, who is known as more of a run-stuffer, was projected as a starting defensive tackle for the Colts, but he's slated to miss a good chunk of time due to an ankle injury. Jones had just 1.5 sacks last season in his first year with the Colts after four or more sacks the past two seasons, while his production was down as he missed seven games due to an ankle injury.
Jones piled up 53 tackles (28 solo) and four sacks in 53 games for Baltimore last season and then signed a five-year, $30 million contract with the Colts. He'll get significant playing time on the defensive line, but it's not clear if he'll be a starter. He'll compete for the starting nose tackle role with Josh Chapman and could also get playing time at defensive end. Either way, he's a key run stuffer for the Colts.
Jones, the brother of UFC fighter Jon "Bones" Jones and Patriots outside linebacker Chandler Jones, came on strong late in the 2012 season. He recorded 4.5 sacks from Weeks 12-14, then notched another sack in Baltimore's Super Bowl victory over the Giants. A strong finish to 2012 has Jones firmly in the mix for a starting job this season, but the Baltimore defensive line looks pretty crowded.
Jones will compete with Pernell McPhee to start at defensive end. Even if he doesn't win the job, Jones should be an important part of Baltimore's defensive line rotation in 2012.
Jones should see time in the Ravens rotation along the defensive line. He isn't a starter, however, and definitely should not be considered an option for IDP purposes.
Considering the Ravens' depth at defensive line, Jones won't see much playing time this season.
