The Giants placed Casillas (neck) on injured reserve Wednesday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Casillas' neck stinger worsened during the Giants' Thanksgiving Day loss to the Redskins, then sidelined him for the Week 13 loss to the Raiders. With Casillas evidently not making much notable progress in recent days, the Giants decided to shut the linebacker down for the season. He'll finish the 2017 campaign with 35 tackles (25 solo) and one pass breakup across eight contests. Casillas will become a free agent this offseason and may have played his last game with the Giants.

The speedy Casillas has a locked-in role on the Giants defense and by most standards projects as the team's top linebacker IDP, but he falls this far down the list because that same locked-in role comes with clear limitations. The Giants will give plenty of snaps to Keenan Robinson, Devon Kennard and B.J. Goodson, which means Casillas' play count could fall around last year's 71.6 percent workload. If Casillas should stumble into more work than that, though, he'd be an interesting asset after approaching triple-digit tackles on last year's abbreviated workload.
Projected starting weak side linebacker, could be a decent source of tackles. But could also be pushed for snaps by Keenan Robinson and/or J.T. Thomas.
Reserve linebacker, could see a more significant role, especially if Jon Beason is unable to stay healthy.
Casillas had 35 tackles (23 solo), two passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one tackle for loss in 12 games played in 2013 splitting time and OLB with the now-departed Dekoda Watson. Barring any changes before the start of the season, it looks like Casillas will get the chance to be a full time starter in 2014, so his numbers should improve across the board.
Casillas' great athleticism makes him a player to watch closely in IDP leagues if he can beat out Mason Foster for nickel snaps.
Casillas put up solid numbers last year, but with the addition of David Hawthorne and Curtis Lofton via free agency, je is expected to serve as a backup outside linebacker.
After being announced the starting outside linebacker based on his preseason performance, Casillas missing the entire 2010 season with a foot injury suffered before the season began. Casillas is a bit undersized but possesses elite speed for a linebacker. Casillas has stated that he will be 100% by training camp, but there will almost certainly be an open competition for the starting spot. If Casillas can regain the form he displayed last preseason and earn the starting gig, he could be a major sleeper in IDP leagues.
Casillas will compete for the starting outside linebacker position vacated by Scott Fujita. The coaching staff has praised Casillas for his play and he even started a few games last year n Fujita's absence. He will likely compete with o-Lon Dunbar and the winner of the starting gig will have the opportunity to post decent numbers given defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' attacking schemes.
Casillas is in competition for a roster spot at one of the Saints outside linebacker positions.
