Category Strategy: Lamb, Sabonis Among Top Early Season Adds

This article is part of our Category Strategy series.

As they say in Ma$e's timeless epic - You Back Kid! The 2017-18 season is underway, and the waiver wire is already going wild. On Monday, I highlighted general waiver additions, but this article is all about focusing in on players who can help in each specific category of need.

In general, we'll focus on players available in at least 50% of leagues in ESPN, Yahoo!, and CBS. That said, since the ownership can vary significantly from one site to the next, sometimes we have to fudge those rules a bit, especially early in the season.

Before we can into the ranks, just a PSA to all owners, but especially to ESPN: go check if Lauri Markkanen is available. He's still available in one-third of Yahoo! leagues, and over two-thirds of ESPN leagues. That's just silly. He's averaging almost a double-double and more than three three-pointers in 34.0 minutes per game. He won't be available much longer.

POINTS

Jeremy Lamb, Hornets
(Ownership: ESPN – 9%; Yahoo! – 30%; CBS – 47%)

Lamb isn't a long-term add, but it's nonetheless surprising to see his ownership so low. With Nic Batum (elbow) expected to miss roughly another month, Lamb should have at least that long to contribute to fantasy teams. He's averaging 33.7 minutes per game, and the most likely prospect to eat into his workload -- rookie Malik Monk -- is shooting 18.2 percent from the field. An average of 15.7 points, along with solid rebound production and a

He's averaging 33.7 minutes per game, and the most likely prospect to eat into his workload -- rookie Malik Monk -- is shooting 18.2 percent from the field. An average of 15.7 points, along with solid rebound production and a steady workload, should be more than enough to put Lamb into your lineups.

Justin Holiday is a touch too heavily owned to be the focus of this section, but he's still available in more than half of ESPN leagues. Averaging 36.0 minutes per game, he'd be worth an add even if he wasn't getting 18.3 points.

Other suggestions:Justin Holiday, Bulls; DeMarre Carroll, Nets; Josh Richardson, Heat; Domantas Sabonis, Pacers

THREE-POINTERS

Danny Green, Spurs
(Ownership: ESPN – 19%; Yahoo! – 46%; CBS – 39%)

Perennial fantasy tease Danny Green has been replaced by the monster who took over his body and dominated the 2014-15 season, at least for now. In almost every category, Green is averaging either a career-best or his best since that semi-infamous 2014-15 campaign. In that season, Green finished as a top-30 player in 9-category leagues (top-45 in 8-category), bolstered by 2.4 threes per game on top of an otherwise well-balanced profile.

In 2017-18, Green is back to shooting 2.3 threes per game, again accompanied by some rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. His minutes, and therefore his numbers, will likely decline when Kawhi Leonard (quad) returns, but we still have no idea when that will be. And since Leonard and Green technically play different positions, there's a decent chance that Green will keep his value even after Leonard is healthy.

I started the article with this, but it bears repeating: If Lauri Markkanen is available in your league, he's the add for managers looking for threes. He's only owned in 31 percent of ESPN leagues.

As of this writing, Joe Ingles is too heavily owned to qualify for this article, but a lot of managers will probably drop him after a poor showing Tuesday night. If they do, snag him quickly. I have him well inside my top-100 for the season, and he played poorly Tuesday because he was ill and saw limited minutes.

Jerryd Bayless is another excellent option for threes. I went into more detail on him on Monday.

Other suggestions:Terry Rozier, Celtics; Josh Richardson, Heat; Jerryd Bayless, 76ers; C.J. Miles, Raptors; Yogi Ferrell, Mavericks; DeMarre Carroll, Nets; Ian Clark, Pelicans

REBOUNDS

Domantas Sabonis, Pacers
(Ownership: ESPN – 16%; Yahoo! – 31%; CBS – 47%)

Sabonis has been making the most of his increased run with Myles Turner (concussion) sidelined. Since Turner got injured in the first game, we really don't know what to expect from Sabonis after Turner returns. That said, Sabonis has clearly earned himself some extra run once Turner returns. Sabonis is averaging 10.3 rebounds in 28.0 minutes without Turner, and has scored at least 15 points in back-to-back games. He's a short-term add in leagues of any size, with long-term potential, especially in deep leagues.

Tyson Chandler is basically a pure rebounder, but as the Suns look to add stability after an early-season coaching change, I expect Chandler's role as a starter seeing at least 24 minutes a night will be pretty stable. Even if the Suns want to focus on their youth, letting Chandler keep his starting role gives him added influence as a "positive veteran presence" in a very young locker room. Sticking with the Suns, Alex Len provides fewer rebounds, but his fantasy ceiling is much higher than Chandler's.

Other suggestions:Al-Farouq Aminu, Trail Blazers; Kelly Olynyk, Heat; John Collins, Hawks; Jeremy Lamb, Hornets

ASSISTS

Jerian Grant, Bulls
(Ownership: ESPN – 6%; Yahoo! – 19%; CBS – 51%)

*cue 30 for 30 intro music* What if I told you, there was a starting point guard averaging 31 minutes and 7.3 assists per game, but he wasn't owned in more than 80 percent of fantasy leagues.

I'm supposed to fill a whole blurb with words, but, really, what else is there to say? Any starting point guard averaging at least 30 minutes should be owned, especially if they are passing this effectively. Grant benefits from Kris Dunn's (finger) absence, but there is no reason to believe that Dunn would completely supplant Grant when Grant is playing this effectively.

Mike James deserves some attention after recording 13 assists over the last two games. I'm not sold that James will beat out Tyler Ulis as the Suns' backup point guard, though James has the edge for now. If you need immediate help, James is probably the better bet, but if you're feeling good about your roster and just looking for an upside stash, I prefer Ulis.

Other suggestions:Terry Rozier, Celtics; Evan Turner, Trail Blazers; Mike James, Suns; Tyler Ulis, Suns; Delon Wright, Raptors; D.J. Augustin, Magic; J.J. Barea, Mavericks; Jameer Nelson, Pelicans

STEALS

Caris LeVert, Nets
(Ownership: ESPN – 12%; Yahoo! – 34%; CBS – 61%)

LeVert averaged 0.9 steals in 21.7 minutes as a rookie, which translates to 1.2 per 28.5 minutes (which is his current minutes average). So while his current steals rate is likely to drop a little, he still projects as a solid source going forward. His role expanded when Jeremy Lin (knee) went down, and he looks almost locked in at his current role of just under 30 minutes per game.

Terry Rozier was highlighted in Monday's article, but averaging 2.0 steals per game warrants explicit attention here as well.

If Bogdan Bogdanovic (that's Bogdan of the Kings, not Bojan of the Pacers) is going to continue seeing roughly 25 minutes per night, as he did in his debut, then he's likely to be a good source of steals, too.

Other suggestions:Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Nets; Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kings; Kelly Oubre, Wizards; Austin Rivers, Clippers

BLOCKS

Larry Nance Jr., Lakers
(Ownership: ESPN – 16%; Yahoo! – 36%; CBS – 38%)

Usually it takes a few weeks for the waiver wire to become a desolate desert when it comes to blocks, but that seems to have come early this year, which is why Lance is one of the best options available. Nance isn't a great shot-blocker, and he doesn't have a stranglehold on his position on the depth chart. That said, he does have three blocks in three games, and he averaged a block per-36 minutes last season. His minutes have been volatile, but if the energetic forward can settle into the mid-20s, he should be a not-bad source of blocks whose overall profile is worth owning.

Jarrett Allen has played exactly 15 minutes in all three of his games, and it might be months before that number increases, which really handicaps his fantasy value. Even so, he's already blocked six shots in those 45 minutes, so he's already addable for a blocks-desperate owner, or for someone with a lot of patience.

Other suggestions:Josh Richardson, Heat; Danny Green, Spurs
