ANALYSIS
Ayres hasn't played in the NBA since 2015-16, when he appeared in 17 games as a member of the Clippers. The following year, he appeared in G-League games, but didn't play well enough to ultimately get called up. Most recently, he played for the Turkish club Eskishehir Basket. Ayres started 23 of his 31 appearances, averaging 10.6 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 56.5 percent from the field. Considering Ayres is 31 years old, an NBA comeback seems like a longshot at this point.

Jeff Ayres is heading into his fifth season in the NBA. Last season was his first in San Antonio, and he averaged 3.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.2 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game in 13 minutes per game through 73 games. He shot 58 percent from the field on 2.4 attempts per game and 69 percent from the line on 0.8 attempts per game. Ayres started a career high 10 games in 2013-14 and has proven himself as an adept per-minute rebounder through his career in the NBA. He averaged 9.8 rebounds per 36 minutes last season after averaging over double digits in the two previous seasons, when he was a member of the Indiana Pacers. The big man from Arizona State is strictly a post player, taking 64 percent of his shots from within three feet of the rim last season, and his fantasy value is limited to the deepest of leagues. If you need rebounds, although he only recorded double-digit boards twice last season, Ayres could be of use if the Spurs' frontcourt were to suffer injuries. Aron Baynes may decide not to re-sign with San Antonio, which would likely give Ayres more court time this season, but in general, he's stuck at the bottom of the depth chart.
Formerly known as Jeff Pendergraph, Ayres reconnected with his biological father over the offseason, and was brought in from Indiana to provide frontcourt depth in free agency. Ayres should be good for a handful of points and rebounds off the bench, but will see a limited role unless the injury bug strikes in San Antonio.
Pendergraph joins the Pacers for 2011-12 after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. When healthy, Pendergraph has the smarts, fundamentals and effort to play and defend both forward spots, though he is a bit undersized at the four. There isn’t much to his offensive game – Pendergraph scores mostly off the ball in transition, cuts or offensive rebounds.
With injuries to Portland big men Greg Oden and then, just weeks later, Joel Przybilla, Pendergraph saw quite a bit of playing time in late December and early January. After the arrival of Marcus Camby, however, Pendergraph only topped 10 minutes once -- during the last game of the season versus Golden State. With a number of better players between him and the top of the depth chart in Portland, he's unlikely to be a fantasy factor this season.
The Blazers acquired Pendergraph in a draft-day swap with the Kings. At 6-9, 240, he has the size to play both forward positions. He showed promise during the Las Vegas Summer League, but a hip injury will keep him sidelined for all of training camp and the first month of the regular season. The rotation will likely be set by the time he returns, so look for him to spend most of his rookie campaign on the bench.
