Glen Davis

Assuming he is healthy in time, Davis should serve as the starting power forward at the beginning of the season, while also seeing significant time as the Magic's primary backup center. Davis is an inefficient shooter for a big man, and is likely to see less court time while the Magic audition its younger, more durable assets. The minutes cut will decrease his value, but he will see enough time to remain on the fantasy radar as long as he is healthy, even in shallower leagues.

Davis will play power forward and center this year, but will begin as Orlando’s starting 4. Davis will be Orlando’s lone offensive post presence, and Vaughn thinks “he’ll want to handle a heavier load for sure,” so expect Davis to be a focal point. Big Baby was drastically better as a starter than reserve last season (averaging 19.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in the playoffs), and should be a steady contributor for Orlando at either position, particularly offensively.

Davis will back up both Anderson and Howard at times. Davis can certainly score, averaging 12 points off the bench last season in Boston. He provides tremendous energy, and has developed into a strong low-post defender (especially help defender), despite being undersized. Davis was brought in partially because of Howard’s affinity for him, but he is also a defensive upgrade from Brandon Bass.

Which Davis will we see this year? Will it be the Glen Davis who topped 15 points in four separate playoff games and nearly singlehandedly won Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Lakers? Or the Davis who missed two months of the season after breaking a thumb in a street fight and averaged only six points and four rebounds in 54 games after that. The truth lies somewhere in between, though if Garnett misses time, Big Baby will become a popular waiver pickup.

Some clutch work in KG's absence, and especially in the playoffs, earned Big Baby a new two-year, $6.5 million contract. The Celtics expect Davis to continue his development and increased production. That may be a tough challenge in 2009-10 with Garnett's return and Wallace's arrival. Like Wallace, Big Baby is in place to help the team win a championship, which won't translate into him being a part of any fantasy titles.

Like frontcourt-mate, Powe, Davis was good-to-great at times last season. And like Powe, those times were few and far between. He probably won't get enough run to merit fantasy consideration, but Davis could put up very respectable numbers if, say, Garnett, Perkins or Powe were to miss time due to injury.

Despite dropping to the second round in this year’s draft, “Big Baby” really could not have asked for a better situation in which to showcase his talents. The portly Davis featured a wide array of offensive moves and an innate ability to rebound while attending LSU. If he impresses coaches in training camp and practice, we may see Davis eat away at Kendrick Perkins’ center minutes. Given the right opportunity, Davis could be an under-the-radar midseason fantasy pickup, especially with Kevin Garnett drawing almost constant double-teams in the low post. Keep an eye on Davis, as he could surprise some people this year and become a valuable waiver wire acquisition.
