Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

If you're a daily fantasy baseball junkie, you'd better take advantage of Sunday's slate. Thanks to the All-Star break, it'll be a few days before you get another chance to put together a lineup. There are 15 games Sunday, with the first contests beginning at 1:05 PM EST. Here are some recommendations to try and help take you into the break on a high note.

STARTING PITCHER

Jon Lester, CHC at SDP ($48): Thanks to a 2.46 ERA and offensive support, Lester comes in with an 11-2 record. His FIP may be 4.36, but his career FIP is a healthy 3.60. The Padres rank 28th in runs scored, and Petco Park is usually quite beneficial to pitchers.

Joe Musgrove, PIT vs. MIL ($35): Musgrove's first full season as a starter – and his first year with the Pirates – has gotten off to a good start. He sports a 3.42 FIP and has struck out 8.93 batters per game, both personal bests. The Brewers sit middle-of-the-pack in runs scored, but not many great options exist among pitchers Sunday. And if you're trying to save a buck or two, Musgrove might be your best 'value' option.

CATCHER

Matt Wieters, WAS at NYM ($13): Wieters has never quite lived up to the hype, but at least he's showed power in the past. He's hit over 20 homers three times in his career, and has popped three in 27 games this year. Corey Oswalt has only pitched in four games, and all have been this season. But during that time, he has struggled with a 6.75 ERA.

FIRST BASE

C.J. Cron, TAM at MIN ($17): After moving from Anaheim to Tampa, Cron has taken his power to a new level. He currently boasts a career-high .480 slugging percentage and 19 homers. Meanwhile, Twins rookie hurler Fernando Romero enters with a 4.47 FIP.

SECOND BASE

Cesar Hernandez, PHI at MIA ($14): Hernandez has a .377 OBP, and he's shown both power and speed. And with eight homers and 14 stolen bases, he's averaged 6.7 fantasy points per game. Jose Urena sports a career ERA of 4.57, and this season he's been only marginally better at 4.13.

THIRD BASE

Mike Moustakas, KAN at CWS ($19): Moustakas broke out last year with a .521 slugging percentage and 38 homers. His .469 slugging this year is still impressive, as are his 19 home runs. Lucas Giolito has inexplicably gotten 18 starts for the White Sox this season with a 6.41 FIP, and this might not be a fluke since he was somehow even worse in 2016.

SHORTSTOP

Tim Anderson, CWS vs. KAN ($14): Let's flip to the other side of this uninspiring matchup between the Royals and White Sox. Anderson struggles to get on base, but he shows power for a shortstop and also poses a threat with his legs. Last season, he tallied 17 homers and 15 stolen bases. And this year, he has 13 home runs and 21 swiped bags. Burch Smith has pitched in 25 games this year, but only one of them as a starter. Despite that, he has logged an awful 5.83 ERA.

OUTFIELD

David Peralta, ARI at ATL ($21): Put a righty on the mound and Peralta is likely going to be happy, as can be seen by his .938 OPS against right-handed pitchers this year. Julio Teheran is not just a righty, but one with a 5.27 FIP this season who has also allowed 1.63 homers per nine innings in 2018.

Michael Brantley, CLE vs. NYY ($16): Brantley is making up for all those times he's spent injured over his career. He's slashing .308/.353/.485 this year, which would qualify as great numbers for any player. Masahiro Tanaka has struggled mightily the last couple of seasons, with a 4.38 FIP last year and an even-worse 5.02 mark over this campaign. To make matters worse, Tanaka has also given up 1.99 homers per nine innings.

Adam Eaton, WAS at NYM ($15): Since returning from injury, Eaton has been on a tear with a .333/.400/.429 slash line through 36 games. As previously noted, rookie pitcher Corey Oswalt sports a 6.75 ERA this season.
