Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

CC Sabathia, NYY at CLE ($33): There is no doubt that Corey Kluber will be heavily owned across the two-game slate, but those looking to throw a dart in a GPP tournament may want to look at Sabathia, who notched a 3.18 ERA over 73.2 innings during the regular season. It is also worth noting that the Indians finished the year with a bottom 10 RAA against the cutter, a pitch the left-hander threw 30 percent of the time.

Tanner Roark, WAS at CHC ($34): Roark's 2017 wasn't anything to write home about, but he did manage to log a career-best 10.1 percent swinging strike rate to go along with his heavy groundball tendencies. This could make him an intriguing value/scarcity play, as the Cubs struck out more than 22 percent of the time against righties during the regular season while hitting the ball on the ground at a 45.5 percent clip.

Catcher

Yan Gomes, CLE vs. NYY ($12): Affordable power is the name of the game when you are looking at so many high-priced assets, and Gomes ended the regular season having logged a .264 ISO against lefties over 106 at-bats. The 30-year-old has always had an issue with the strikeout, but that may be less of a factor against Sabathia, who held just a 17.6 percent punchout rate on the road.

First Base

Ryan Zimmerman, WAS at CHC ($17): Jake Arrieta had a strong second half overall but was hammered in September, allowing nine runs (seven earned) over three starts. Zimmerman wasn't quite as strong against same-handed pitchers as he was with the platoon advantage in 2017 but still tallied a .252 ISO and .375 wOBA over 397 at-bats.

Second Base

Daniel Murphy, WAS at CHC ($17): Murphy showed tremendous power against righties during the regular season, notching a .231 ISO over 407 at-bats. Arrieta struggled with left-handers over the course of the season, as evidenced by the .498 slugging percentage he allowed over 73.2 innings.

Third Base

Kris Bryant, CHC vs. WAS ($17): Bryant notched a 25.2 RAA against the fastball this year, while Roark's heater registered a –7.0 RAA. We can look to Bryant to try and get some lift on Roark's offerings, as he hit the ball in the air at a 42.4 percent clip.

Shortstop

Francisco Lindor, CLE vs. NYY ($20): Our options at shortstop are rather limited, making Lindor worth a look despite his struggles during the postseason. The switch hitter notched a .224 ISO and a blistering 41.2 percent hard contact rate against lefties over 223 at-bats during regulation play.

Outfield

Brett Gardner, NYY at CLE ($16): Kluber had an absolutely fantastic 2017 campaign, so it may surprise some to learn that his fastball registered a -2.2 RAA. The Yankees will still need to contend with his otherworldly curveball, but Gardner could have success against the heater, as he notched a 13.0 RAA against the pitch.

Austin Jackson, CLE vs. NYY ($8): Jackson's price is like a breath of fresh air in the outfield, as he logged a .221 ISO and a .429 wOBA against southpaws over 122 at-bats during the regular season. Jackson's stolen base numbers have been inconsistent in recent years but he has one steal in this series, which may mean that owners could get an unexpected benefit if he reaches first base.

Kyle Schwarber, CHC vs. WAS ($14): Count Schwarber among the affordable power brigade, as he finished the regular season with a .276 ISO against right-handed pitching over 340 at-bats. The 24-year-old's 46.5 percent fly ball rate would register as the highest mark on the team if he had enough at-bats to qualify.
