Yahoo DFS Baseball: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Madison Bumgarner, SF vs SD ($58): Bumgarner didn't look great in his first start back from the DL, but he did throw 102 pitches, which means there aren't any restrictions on him right now. That's good news, because he's likely to go deep into this game against the Padres. The Padres put up three runs on Bumgarner in his most recent start and that's about the most you can expect from that matchup. The Padres enter with the lowest wOBA against lefties this season and the sixth highest K rate.

Jimmy Nelson, MIL at PIT ($49): Nelson has quickly become one of the better pitchers in the majors and while he's not at the elite level yet, he's been consistently good for most of the season. Nelson enters with a 3.27 ERA and a 9.88 K/9 this season. The Pirates are not generally a good team to target, but against righties, they've had some problems this year. While they don't strike out at a high rate, the Pirates do have the seventh lowest wOBA against righties this season.

CATCHER

Russell Martin, TOR at BOS ($16): Doug Fister has not pitched well in his short time with the Red Sox as he's struggled to go deep in any of his four starts. Fister enters with a 6.75 ERA and he faces another tough lineup in the Blue Jays. Martin enters with a .348 wOBA against righties this season and should be a part of any Blue Jays stack.

FIRST BASE

Mike Napoli, TEX at BAL ($16): Kevin Gausman inexplicably shut down the Rangers last night, but the odds of that happening again with Wade Miley on the mound today are slim. Miley enters with a 5.40 ERA, and he's allowed seven runs in two of his past three starts. Napoli has been on a tear lately and he enters with highest wOBA against lefties this season on the Rangers.

SECOND BASE

Dustin Pedroia, BOS vs TOR ($18): There should be plenty of runs scored at Fenway today as both starting pitchers have struggled this season. Toronto sends Francisco Liriano to the mound and he brings a 6.75 ERA with him. There are plenty of bats to consider on Boston today, but Pedroia is at the top of the list. Pedroia started the season very slowly, but has come on lately and enters with a .435 wOBA against lefties this season.

THIRD BASE

Adrian Beltre, TEX at BAL ($19): The Rangers have not fared well this series against the Orioles, but with Miley on the mound I look for the entire lineup (or at least the righties) to get healthy today. Beltre has actually fared better against righties this season, but Miley is an exceptionally vulnerable lefty and I have a hard time believing he get through the Rangers lineup more than two times. Beltre enters with a .339 wOBA against lefties this season.

SHORTSTOP

Didi Gregorius, NYY at SEA ($15): Gregorius was mired in a slump a couple of weeks ago, but he's worked his way out over the past seven days and he has an interesting matchup with Felix Hernandez on the mound. Hernandez has looked sharp in his past two outings, but considering his performance prior to those outings, I'm not ready to declare that he's all the way back. Gregorius enters with a .359 against righties this season.

OUTFIELD

Jose Bautista, TOR at BOS ($17): With the high-priced pitching options in play on this slate, a Blue Jays stack against Fister looks like a good strategy. The Jays have struggled as a whole for a majority of the season, which has driven their individual prices down, but that's to our benefit today as their value is high against Fister. Bautista is one of those guys who has a lot of value as he has good lifetime numbers against Fister and he's hit righties well this season.

Tommy Pham, STL at NYM ($19): From a pitching perspective, there aren't a lot of good options on this slate, and from a hitting perspective there aren't a lot of good pitchers to target either, which makes it a tough day to put a lineup together. There are a couple good stacking options on this slate, but beyond that, you'll have to find good matchups, like Pham against Seth Lugo. Pham enters with a .370 wOBA against righties this season and Lugo enters with a 4.50 ERA.

Mikie Mahtook, DET at KC ($11): With J.D. Martinez now in Arizona, Mahtook should get more playing time and it looks like the prospect of more playing time has given Mahtook a shot of adrenaline as he's homered in two of his past three games. Even prior to Martinez departing, Mahtook was a good spot play against lefties and that's what he gets here against Danny Duffy, who has yet to regain his form from last season. Mahtook enters with a .327 wOBA against lefties this season.
