Mondesi plans to play for the Escogido Lions in the Dominican Winter League next month and says he would like to return to the majors next season, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
"Several people have contacted my agent to find out if I'm still in baseball, and the answer is yes," Mondesi said. "Now that my knee is fine, I'd like to keep playing baseball." Mondesi blamed his poor play the last two seasons on a sore right knee from a torn right quadriceps muscle he injured during the 2004 season.

Mondesi perfectly reflects the Braves' willingness to creatively fill their offensive positions in an unorthodox manner. He's a bit of a risk, following a bizarre 2004 season that saw him work his way out of one contract with the Pirates due to family issues (which were largely rumored to be contract issues), only to end up in Anaheim. In a bit of possible karmatic justice, Mondesi's season was ended with a quadriceps injury and his contract terminated when he failed to show for a rehab session. Those issues, plus his shrinking power and speed, represent a bit of a gamble for the Braves in filling their void in right field, but Mondesi still offers some upside for the price.
Mondesi hit a combined .271-19-71 in 143 games last year with an .820 OPS, so although he won't get anywhere near his old salary in 2004, he'll likely hook up with someone who needs a right-handed bat at either DH or a corner outfield spot.
Mondesi, who says he will retire after the 2003 season, puts up decent fantasy numbers if you can brook the low batting average, but his supporting real baseball numbers are horrendous for a right fielder. After his trade to the Yankees, Mondesi went .241/.315/.430 in 270 at-bats, and if the Yankees can't move his ridiculous contract before next season, it will be interesting to see how much they play him with Rondell White, Juan Rivera and Nick Johnson in the corner outfielder/DH mix.

Mondesi was held out of Saturday's loss to Philadelphia with a sore right knee. He says the sore knee is related to last season's torn right quadriceps muscle, which is still causing him problems this season, the Associated Press reports. "It's tough playing right now," he said. "I know I hit a lot of ground balls that would be a base hit."
