Reaches deal with Astros
PHouston Astros  AAA
December 5, 2023
Marquez signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Marquez missed two seasons following shoulder surgery and struggled upon his return last year, posting a 4.99 ERA and 44:38 K:BB over 30.2 frames across four levels in the minors. The left-hander will turn just 25 next month, though, so the Astros felt the former top prospect was worth a roll of the dice.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Marquez, the Cubs' top pitching prospect, made a surprise big-league debut on the final day of the regular season, giving up five runs while recording two outs. The 6-foot-4 southpaw was rewarded for a strong showing at the alternate site, where he worked on refining his offspeed pitches and improving his command/control. On pure velocity, his fastball stacks up against any lefty in pro ball, sitting in the upper-90s and touching triple digits. His slider and changeup improved at the alternate site, as they have in each of the past couple seasons, and he developed a show-me curveball. Like with most young pitchers who throw this hard, the two big things that will determine Marquez's career path are health and command. His command will need to improve for him to remain a starter, and odds are he will need Tommy John surgery at some point. He should head to Double-A this season.
Marquez has a chance to be the Cubs' first good homegrown starter since Jeff Samardzija, or Kyle Hendricks if we count him, even though he was drafted by the Rangers. A 6-foot-4, 185-pound southpaw, Marquez has an 80-grade fastball that regularly touches triple digits. Blake Snell and James Paxton led left-handed starters with an average fastball velocity of 95.5 mph, and Marquez easily outpaces them. He also has a plus slider and average changeup. His power arsenal allowed him to log an impressive 50.6 GB% across 103.2 innings. It will be his command that dictates whether he is a lights-out reliever or frontline starter. Marquez has worked diligently to sync up his delivery in an effort to improve his control, and it showed as the season went on. He logged a 13.0 BB% at Low-A and a 6.6 BB% in five High-A starts. Every pitching prospect carries significant risk, but few can match his upside.
