Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Crichton has opted to retire from professional baseball, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
Crichton made 93 appearances from 2017 through 2021 over parts of four seasons in the big leagues with Baltimore and Arizona, accruing a 4.79 ERA and 1.49 WHIP while gathering nine saves across 92 career innings. Injuries limited him to just four appearances with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno in 2022, but Crichton reported to camp healthy and received an invitation to big-league spring training. The 30-year-old was still facing an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster, however, and rather than spending another season in the minors, Crichton decided he was better off calling an end to his career.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Crichton emerged as Arizona's primary closer following the midseason trade of Archie Bradley and went on to record the first five saves of his career. While his 2.42 ERA in 26.0 innings was closer material, the rest of his profile looks considerably more like a middle reliever. His sinker-slider profile led to an above-average (though hardly elite) 47.9% groundball rate, but neither his 21.1 K% or 8.3 BB% was anything special. In fact, both represented steps back from his 26.8 K% and 6.5 BB% in 30.1 innings the year prior, when he recorded a 3.56 ERA in a lower-leverage role. Barring a sudden talent change, Crichton will probably pitch at the level of solid middle reliever or setup man this season, but fantasy value in a reliever is as much a function of role as of talent. He has a good shot to close in 2021 if Arizona doesn't bring in anyone ahead of him, though he'll be a lower-tier closer at best.
Crichton is of the sinker/slider mold that once proliferated major-league bullpens, but is now more of a rarity. He is the guy Arizona wants up there when there is a hitter at the plate and a double play is needed to get out of a sticky situation in a medium-leverage spot. That's Crichton's role -- something a major-league club needs but a fantasy team has no use for. He has decent strikeout rates at most levels as his fastball has nice run on it, forcing hitters to eventually expand their zone. The breaking ball has high spin with an above-average swing-and-miss rate. In his limited MLB career, it has been fellow righties that have given him trouble (.308 average) as the lefties struggle with his tailing fastball (.254). Unless his role changes, he can stay in the FAAB pile.
