Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Barnes' first full season in the big-league bullpen was solid, if rather unremarkable. Any enthusiasm over his 3.55 ERA and 1.09 WHIP should be tempered by his .222 BABIP and 81.6 percent strand rate -- the estimators point to Barnes being closer to a mid-4.00s pitcher. He posted a 23.4 strikeout percentage, which is decent but not great for a reliever, and a 9.1 walk percentage. The right-hander had issues with the long ball (1.50 HR/9) and those problems could have been worse given his heavy flyball skew (52.0 percent). On the bright side: Barnes was very good against opposite-handed hitters (.232 wOBA) and had a 3.13 ERA away from Rogers Centre. He works mostly fastball-changeup, spinning a breaking pitch only five percent of the time last season. Barnes is a viable MLB reliever but may not have the arsenal to advance much further in the bullpen hierarchy.
Barnes had a spectacular minor league season, working his way to a 0.73 ERA in 41 combined appearances between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo. The righty tallied a ridiculous 13.0 K/9 while limiting opposing hitters to a measly .071 average over 25.2 innings in Buffalo. He was recalled by the Jays in August and pitched frequently in September. The team thought so highly of him that it replaced Francisco Liriano (injury) with Barnes on the ALDS roster. Although the rookie had encouraging splits in the minors, he wasn't as versatile in his limited major league action. Barnes held left-handed hitters in check (.200 average over 20 at-bats), but was tagged by righties (.323 in 31 at-bats). The 27-year-old will get a fair chance in spring training, and many expect Barnes will break camp in 2017 as a member of the Jays' bullpen.
