The Giants released Hildenberger on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hildenberger was in the midst of his third season in the Giants organization after re-signing on a minor-league deal in February. After Hildenberger served up 12 runs (10 earned) in 5.2 innings over five relief appearances for Triple-A Sacramento, however, the Giants decided to cut ties with the right-hander. The 32-year-old last appeared in the majors in 2021, when he made two appearances for the Mets.

Hildenberger looked set to be a key piece of the Minnesota bullpen, but struggled to an 8.36 ERA in 14 innings before being demoted in mid-May. He then spent two months on the injured list with a right flexor mass strain. He didn't fare much better when he returned from the injury with a 4.47 ERA at Triple-A and then gave up six runs in 2.1 innings in three big league appearances in September. Hildenberger doesn't have an overpowering fastball, but the sidewinder is still able to miss bats at a decent clip (8.3 K/9) thanks to a deceptive delivery and solid movement on his secondary pitches. However, Hilldenberger's velocity declined to just an 87.8 mph average fastball last season, which made it hard for him to set up his off-speed offerings. It's hard to read too much into his season given his injury, but he likely faces an uphill battle to win a major league bullpen job until he can prove himself again in the minors.
While Hildenberger doesn't have an overpowering fastball (89.6 mph), the sidewinder is still able to miss bats at a decent clip (8.6 K/9, 12.8% swinging-strike rate) thanks to his deceptive delivery and solid movement on his secondary pitches, notably his changeup. Hildenberger had a 3.33 ERA in the first half, but faded by giving up 27 runs over his final 27 innings. During that span he got a trial at closer, converting 7-of-9 save chances but with an 8.47 ERA and 5.3 BB/9. Hildenberger had trouble with the long ball, giving up 12 home runs on the season. Part of his troubles may have been due to bad luck, as he had a 19.4 HR/FB, though his groundball rate also declined to 46.3% (58.8% in 2017). Despite his late-season struggles, he should figure prominently in the setup corps again.
Hildenberger emerged as one of Minnesota's top bullpen arms last season after being promoted from Triple-A Rochester in June. The rookie kept his composure after he was vaulted into a higher-leverage role following the departure of Brandon Kintzler, notching 12 holds and one save while posting a 3.28 ERA and 25:3 K:BB in 24.2 innings down the stretch. While the sidewinder doesn't have an overpowering fastball -- his sits around 92-93 mph -- he's still able to miss bats at an above-average clip (25.9 percent strikeout rate and 11.8 percent swinging-strike rate in 2017) thanks to his deceptive delivery and solid movement on his secondary pitches, notably his changeup. Hildenberger, who recorded double-digit saves in three consecutive seasons on the farm prior to 2017, could get chances at saves at some point should Fernando Rodney falter, though Addison Reed is likely second in line for the role.
