Returns to action
SSMinnesota Twins
May 25, 2019
Javier (quadriceps) will return to action at Low-A Cedar Rapids on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
A torn labrum cost Javier the entirety of 2018, and a quad strain has kept him out of action thus far in 2019. He hit .299/.383/.471 in 41 games at the rookie-league level back in 2017.

2017
While the top fantasy prospect from the July 2, 2015 signing class (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) is knocking on the door of the majors, the second-best fantasy prospect from that class (at the time of signing) has not made his full-season debut. Javier required surgery for a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, which wiped out his 2018 season. He previously missed almost all of 2016 with a hamstring injury. His mammoth upside was on full display in 2017, when he showcased plus power, plus speed and an all-fields approach. While his bat could profile elsewhere, he should be able to stick at shortstop. Javier's 27.2 K% in the Appalachian League serves as a good reminder that he is still a very risky prospect, but the upside that made him so appealing several years ago is still there. He was able to take batting practice this fall, and while he may be held back in extended spring training, he should spend the bulk of the season in the Midwest League.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had the most fantasy upside in the 2015 July 2 international signing class, but Javier, who signed for $4 million as 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, was right behind him. After missing almost all of 2016 due to a hamstring injury, he was 31 percent better than the average Appalachian League hitter, despite being the sixth youngest hitter in the league. His .410 BABIP helped, but it was still very impressive for a player with just nine pro games under his belt prior to 2017. He is filling out what was seen as an incredibly projectable 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame at the time of his signing, with reports suggesting he is up to 180 pounds with room for more. Javier offers the best of both worlds, as unlike most high-profile international prospects, he not only projects to offer plus power, but he projects to stick at shortstop. He is an above-average runner now, but that probably won’t be a big part of his game by the time he reaches the majors. This year could be his coming out party.
Javier, an 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic who received a $4 million signing bonus in 2015, finally made his professional debut and impressed, albeit in a very small sample. He notched a 199 wRC+, 5:4 K:BB and two home runs across nine games (30 plate appearances) in the the Dominican Summer League before being shut down for the season with a hamstring injury. A potential plus hitter with plus power who has a shot at sticking at shortstop, Javier has the most upside of any player in the Twins system. He measures in at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds, but he projects to fill out in the coming years. With added strength should come a more impactful swing, which will allow him to realize his potential as a hitter. He is at least four years away from sniffing the majors, but if he hits over a full season in 2017, his price tag in dynasty leagues will skyrocket.
