ANALYSIS
Guerra's latest stint with the Rays lasted just under two weeks, with the right-hander making a trio of two-inning relief appearances during that stretch and allowing three earned runs on three hits and four walks. The Rays called up Calvin Faucher from Triple-A Durham to replace Guerra in the bullpen and on the 26-man active roster. Guerra will now be exposed to waivers but could remain in the Tampa Bay organization if he goes unclaimed.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
2015
Quite simply, Guerra had the most disappointing season of any hitting prospect in baseball last year. He had the third-worst slugging percentage (.325) among qualified California League hitters and the fifth-most strikeouts (141) in the league, which is obviously an awful combination. He is not a particularly great defender at shortstop or an asset on the bases, so if he is not getting on base at a solid clip or hitting for power, it is awfully hard for him to impact the game in a positive way. As Guerra will be 21 heading into next season and assigned to either High-A or Double-A, he can hardly be written off. That said, it would be incredibly difficult to get anything of value for him in a dynasty league this offseason despite the fact that he opened 2016 as a consensus top-60 prospect. Despite the Padres adding him to the 40-man roster this offseason, he can be cut loose in fantasy leagues where 200 or fewer prospects are rostered.
No minor league shortstop improved his stock more than Guerra last year, as he was a player to watch heading into 2015 and by season’s end he was a consensus top-50 prospect. On a stacked Greenville Drive team, Guerra’s bat stood out, as he hit 15 home runs as a 19-year-old — four more than teammate and lauded slugging prospect Rafael Devers. One of two headliners (along with Manuel Margot) that went to San Diego in the Craig Kimbrel trade, Guerra projects to play in a much worse home ballpark, but he should also reach the big leagues quicker without Xander Bogaerts in his way. His hit tool will determine whether he is a good fantasy shortstop or a great one, as his speed is below average while his power appears to be well above average for the position. Guerra hit a career best .279 at Low-A, but it's possible that average will be closer to .250 at the big league level. He will start his age-20 season at High-A.
Guerra, 19, was an international free agent signed in 2012 and brought stateside in 2014. He played 51 games for the GCL Red Sox and held is own at the plate. A late-season slump dropped what had been a robust slash line early in August. He has advanced defensive skills at shortstop with a promising bat. Guerra projects as an impact defender who can hold his own at the plate and may develop some pop. He's considered one of the organization's better prospects at the low-end of the minors. He could remain in extended spring training before heading to short-season Low-A Lowell, or be challenged with a full-season assignment at Low-A Greenville.
