Jabari Blash

In the aftermath of the Giancarlo Stanton trade, the Yankees made a move to free up a little payroll, dumping Chase Headley and in exchange acquiring another power-hitting corner outfielder in Blash. Blash parlayed a great spring into an early-season promotion to the Padres, but he mostly struggled (.303 wOBA, 88 wRC+) and ended up riding the shuttle for most of the year. The 28-year-old launched 25 home runs between Triple-A and the majors last season and continued to walk at an excellent clip (14.4 percent), but he also posted a strikeout rate north of 30 percent at both stops, as is his M.O. Blash has been a replacement-level player in 99 career games at the big-league level and he's now completely blocked from playing time with the likes of Clint Frazier and Billy McKinney on the 40-man behind an All-Star cast of starters. He could lose his spot if the Yankees need to add depth at another position.

Blash won a spot on the Padres' Opening Day roster after being selected as a Rule 5 pick in December. He was designated for assignment in May but ended up staying with the organization, spending the next two months at Triple-A El Paso. As expected, Blash showed power during his time in the Pacific Coast League, swatting 11 homers in 229 plate appearances and maintaining a level of plate discipline (41:66 BB:K) that he was unable to maintain against big league pitching. The Padres used Blash sparingly during his time on the 25-man roster, and he was limited to just 84 plate appearances as a result. With sporadic playing time in San Diego, he fanned at an astounding 40.5 percent clip and failed to make a case for regular starts. At age 27, he's looking like a Quad-A type.

The Padres were intrigued enough by Blash to trade for the 26-year-old after the A's selected him in December's Rule 5 draft, and it's hard not to be intrigued. Blash flashed a ridiculous amount of power in 56 games with Triple-A Tacoma last season, hitting 22 home runs with a .376 isolated power mark, bringing his total to 32 homers for the season. He hit more than 50 points higher with Tacoma in 2015 than he did during his 2014 stint, but still managed just a .264 average even with all those extra-base hits; the result of a strikeout rate pushing 28 percent. The swing and miss is the big problem, as that flaw makes him a major batting average risk especially in the short term as he continues to figure out upper-level pitching. But Blash has walked a high clip at every stop, and that helps his chances as he attempts to earn a regular job in left field to begin the 2016 season.
