Retires after career-ending injury

Segedin retired from professional baseball last year after battling ongoing complications in his recovery from November 2017 surgery on his right wrist, Pedro Moura of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Segedin appeared in 53 regular-season games at the big-league level between 2016 and 2017, slashing .226/.282/.355 with two home runs in 103 plate appearances with the Dodgers. Though he returned from the wrist surgery -- his second procedure of that same year to address the injury -- to join the Dodgers for spring training in 2018, he only logged 134 plate appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City before being removed from the 40-man roster in late August. News of Segedin's retirement flew under the radar until the 30-year-old recently filed a lawsuit alleging negligence on the part of the Dodgers' hand consultant who performed his most recent surgery, Dr. Steven Shin. Though his playing career is now over, Segedin remains involved in baseball as a player information assistant in the Phillies organization.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
Despite a strong spring, Segedin failed to break camp as a logjam at corner infield and outfield ticketed him to Triple-A Oklahoma City to open the 2017 campaign. In mid-April, he was summoned, but he hurt his toe in his second game with the Dodgers, prompting a visit to the disabled list. While rehabbing, he hurt his wrist, extending the stay until mid-August. A couple days after his activation, Segedin was sent back to Oklahoma City, returning only when rosters expanded. Playing sparingly, he sported a meek .200/.200/.300 line with the big club, but he hit .320/.347/.515 in Triple-A. With another solid Cactus League showing, Segedin could break camp as the right-handed reserve with some pop at all four corner spots, as there's less competition than in recent years. Still, for fantasy, he's reserve fodder in NL-only formats at best.
The Dodgers' futility against left-handed pitching led to a surprise callup for Segedin in 2016, rewarding him for an excellent season at Triple-A Oklahoma City where he hit .319/.392/.598 with 21 homers. It was vindication for a player who nearly retired when the Yankees had demoted him to the minors and refused to release him so he could look for a team more willing to give him a big league shot. Segedin's splits against southpaws didn't quite serve as the fix the Dodgers were hoping for, as he hit just .205 with 13 strikeouts in 43 plate appearances against lefties. Despite that disappointment, he remains on the 40-man roster and should get another chance at carving out a bench role during spring training. His ability to play all four corner positions gives him a versatility the Dodgers value, but he is likely to begin the 2017 season at Triple-A as long as Scott Van Slyke, who fills essentially the same role, is fully recovered from his wrist surgery.
