Edgar Olmos

A 2008 third-round pick by the Marlins, Olmos has made just 11 major-league appearances. Six of those, including two spot starts, came last season with the Mariners. His four relief appearances were uneventful, but his two starts produced six walks to two strikeouts and he failed to make it out of the second inning in his final outing. He fared better in 20 outings at Triple-A Tacoma, posting a 9.3 K/9, but his lack of control is a problem, including 3.6 BB/9 last year as part of a continuing trend of sky-high walk rates throughout his minor-league career. A 6-foot-4 left-hander, Olmos throws a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a changeup, mixing in an occasional curve. He was claimed off waivers in December by the Cubs and likely will compete for a LOOGY role in spring training.
