ANALYSIS
The veteran righty enters the open market after being designated for assignment Sunday. His 16.50 ERA in six big-league innings this season is alarming, but Guerra was an effective, middle-inning reliever as recently as 2020 and could latch on with a team in need of veteran bullpen depth.

One of a series of relievers acquired mid-season by Washington in 2019 to bolster their beleaguered bullpen, Guerra was largely underwhelming in his time with the club. In 40 games with the Nationals, the veteran posted a 4.86 ERA (4.50 FIP) and allowed nine home runs in 53.2 innings. Between Toronto and Washington, Guerra gave up more fly balls than grounders for the first time in his career (0.82 GB/FB) and, accordingly, was pounded for a career-worst 1.33 HR/9. The right-hander did improve in some areas -- both his 5.9 BB% and 19.9 K% continued a recent trend in a positive direction -- and his .255 xBA was his best mark in the past five seasons. That could be something to build upon, but Guerra is entering his age-34 campaign and is not guaranteed a roster spot after signing a minor-league deal in the offseason. Even if he does stick in the Nats' bullpen, he isn't worth consideration in fantasy leagues.
The White Sox nabbed Guerra off waivers in March, added him to the active roster in May, and he served in an unimportant middle relief role for the rest of the year. His average fastball velocity was only down a few ticks from his rookie season, when he closed for the Dodgers, and he has added an effective new cutter to his repertoire since joining the Sox's pitching staff. However, his strikeout (7.4 K/9) and walk rates (3.9 BB/9) are both unimpressive for his middle relief standing, and the addition of David Robertson via free agency all but guarantees that Guerra won't be tasked with any save situations in 2015.
With a 5.84 ERA at the time, Guerra was removed from the closer role in favor of Kenley Jansen on May 7 and he failed to notch a single save the rest of the season. However, Guerra responded by posting a 1.38 ERA in 32.2 innings the rest of the way after losing his closer role, but did miss some time with knee and oblique injuries. He managed to add to his medical chart by undergoing a minor shoulder procedure in November, but all signs point to him being 100 percent well before he's due to report to spring training. Expect Guerra back in a setup role in 2013, though he's probably fourth in the pecking order for saves.
When Jonathan Broxton went down with an injury and Hong-Chih Kuo and Vicente Padilla had their own issues, it was ultimately Guerra who stepped up and filled the closer role for the Dodgers. In 46.2 innings, Guerra saved 21 games with a 2.31 ERA and 1.179 WHIP. His 7.33 K/9IP and 3.47 BB/9IP were merely average, so Guerra likely won't be guaranteed the closer job headed into spring training. To maintain that role, he'll have to beat out Kenley Jansen, who seemingly struck out every batter he faced last year (actually a 16.10 K/9IP). Regardless, Guerra will have an important role in a Broxton-less pen this year.
Guerra finished a combined 6-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 51 relief appearances between Low-A Great Lakes and Double-A Chattanooga last season, numbers good enough for the Dodgers to add him to the 40-man roster this winter. He could compete for a bullpen spot this spring, but will have limited fantasy value.
